In honor of the summer movie season, we at Children of the Wells have dubbed June “sequel month,” and so we’re writing sequels to last month’s blogs. Nathan already cast even more characters for a CotW movie, and now I’m back to fill out the soundtrack for that movie.
Last time I tackled mainly Bron & Calea-related themes, so now I’ll add my picks for Jaysynn and his band of merry men (and women). As before, I’ve limited myself to music found at OCRemix.org.
Jaysynn’s Theme:
With a title like “Anthem of Exile,” based on the theme of two princes, this was a no-brainer. I prefer the first half for Jaysynn, with its lonely but noble sound. I’m not sold on the jazz organ, but beggars can’t be choosers.
Kyrie’s Theme:
Confession: I’m in love with this song. It has a calmness and beauty to it that exemplifies Kyrie’s role in Jaysynn’s life. At this point in the story, Kyrie really is the soul of Jaysynn’s band, and this song captures the hopefulness that radiates from her.
Amira’s Theme:
Finding a theme for Amira isn’t easy. She’s both a mother and a warrior. She’s both nurturing and tough as nails. This is the best I’ve come up with–a version of Terra’s theme. If you don’t know, Terra’s theme is perhaps the most remixed and recognized of the themes from Final Fantasy. I’m hesitant to use it in a new context, but the gentle opening and the Celtic-style expansion captures Amira better than anything I’ve found so far.
Claw ad Hunter’s Theme:
From the “Just for Fun” files, this song starts playfully and spirals into rambunctious silliness. We haven’t gotten to see a lot of Claw and Hunter so far, but we writers envision them to be perpetually light-hearted and always ready to have a bit of fun, despite circumstances.
Daveer’s Theme:
Daveer’s my favorite new character. He needs a theme that winks at you as he adjusts his suit. This is that theme–a bit of cool, a bit of self-aware absurdity, and a general love of life.
And that’s five–there are characters I haven’t covered yet and some event-specific themes I’ve collected, but no one wants a dozen YouTube videos in one blog, so I’ll just leave it there for now. If nothing else, hopefully you’ve listened to some good music.
I’ll end with a bonus, my pick for a theme for Children of the Wells as a whole. It’s a bonus because it’s based largely on two subjective factors: 1.) The appropriately applicable title “Requiem for a Dying World” and 2.) My deep love of this song. I won’t pretend to be objective about it, having listened to it on repeat numerous times. Still, I think it fits and this is my soundtrack, so there you go. Enjoy!
