Read more about Governor Vac in our first collection!

“Delia Coonhill is asking to see you, Governor.”

Governor Vac looked up from his papers. He was a man not often shocked, but the soldier’s announcement had elicited an emotion very near that. “Send her in.” He gathered up the reports and stored them in a drawer. Delia Coonhill might be the wife of his former Head of Intelligence, but she wasn’t cleared for the information on the reports.

In walked a diminutive, round-faced woman in a simple black dress adorned with a few white frills. Though nearly forty, she still looked like a child, with those dimples and big eyes. Her gait bore a weariness that betrayed her face.

“Good evening, Governor.”

He stood and pulled a wooden chair from the corner to the front of his desk. “Sit, please.”

“Thank you.”

She sat lightly, on the edge of the seat. She clutched a bottle of some sort of liquor to her chest. Vac had last seen her at the funeral, a week ago. He had offered a few words of condolences. Besides that, they had not spoken. They rarely had.

“I brought you this.” She extended the bottle to him. He took it, examining it. Her husband was dead in his service. He did not trust the contents.

“What is it for?”

“Drinking, usually.” She did not smile, but her eyes glimmered briefly. (more…)

Modern business: Team work

Absolutely nothing like our meetings.

We’re coming up on our one-year anniversary here at Children of the Wells. It’s amazing to look back and see how far we’ve come–and to look forward and see how far we have yet to go. Our plans are many, varied, and not exactly concrete, so look forward to lots of interesting twists and turns in the stories to come.

But there’s something to be said for taking reflection at a milestone, too. To celebrate our (mostly) successful passage through a year of writing and posting, we’ve decided to publish a short-story anthology. The idea is to have one short story connected to each of the published novellas. They could be missing scenes, scenes from different perspectives than the ones offered in the published novellas, or stories based around new characters only loosely connected to already-published events. I’ve read the story for The Doctor’s Assistant, by our story editor, Natasha Hayden, and it is excellent in every way. I can’t wait for you all to get to read it. (more…)

How to Tap into a Vision

January 31, 2013

I recently watched an interview with one of my writing heroes, Canadian folk musician Gordon Lightfoot.  He said that he never heard anyone do a cover of one of his songs that he didn’t like.  “Every time someone covers one of your songs, they’re doing you a favor,” he said.

I suppose an arrogant or insecure musician might believe that no one else could do justice to his work, yet Lightfoot’s comment makes a kind of fundamental sense.  If someone else chooses to pick up your work and do they own thing with it, it’s because your work has touched that person.  In the case of a song, they wouldn’t cover it unless they had tapped into the power and feeling and meaning of it for themselves. Their cover is a testament to that fact.

Writing a sequel to someone else’s story has its challenges.  Diving into a world created by a team of writers and visionaries multiplies those challenges.  But as I’ve worked with the Children of the Wells staff and read their writing, I’ve admired their perspective on faith and imagination.  I consider them to have an approach to storytelling that is richer than the perspective many of my writing teachers have had. Father of the Brainchildren

Not Nathan Marchand. From imdb

I’m not a father; I don’t have any children. However, I have many brainchildren, including the characters of my first CotW novella, The Fall of the House of Kyzer. For writers, their creations are like kids. They don’t like being told they’re “ugly” (i.e. bad) and they’re quick to defend and protect them. Some also may be hard-pressed to choose which their favorite is.

While I’ve worked on serialized fiction before with many of the people on this saga’s creative team, I’ve re-learned in the last few months that, like a father does when his kids get married, I have to “let go” of my “children” and entrust them to other people. For the last month, John Bahler has been continuing Jaysynn’s story in The Rules Change, and while I love this story, he’s done things with Jaysynn I may have not done—or things I’d have rather done myself. Torture Jaysynn? That’s my job! (Ever wonder if writers are closet sadists, considering how much they abuse their characters?) (more…)

Absolutely Nothing is Allowed Here

Not these rules…
Vicki & Chuck Rogers via Compfight

I hope you’re enjoying the beginning of The Rules Change. I certainly enjoyed it first time I opened the document on my computer. (I still  think the opening chapter is wonderful at setting the stage.)

While our new author, John Bahler, is busy finishing up future chapters, I’d like to focus on one particular aspect of this novella that really stands out in my mind. (more…)

The Rules Change Premieres Next Week

rules-change3The sequel to The Fall of the House of Kyzer debuts next week. The Rules Change, written by John Bahler, presents an intriguing society in Falcon Point, the long-time enemy of Thyrion. Here’s what you’re in for:

After barely escaping his own city alive, Jaysynn, the last heir to the throne of Kyzer, finds himself eking out a living in a refugee camp outside an enemy city. Falcon Point, the city that rebelled against Jaysynn’s ancestors and declared its independence, now carefully guards and controls its resources in a time of devastation and chaos.

Stripped of what little power he had, Jaysynn considers accepting a new life of less responsibility. But a peaceful future of anonymity alongside the peasants, including fellow refugee Kyrie, may not be possible if the leader of Falcon Point, Governor Vac, learns there is a son of Kyzer on his doorstep.

Get in at the ground level next week. It’s a new city, full of intrigue and fascinating characters. I think you’ll enjoy this new chapter in the world of Children of the Wells.
