Meme Machine

For the last few weeks, my fellow Children of the Wells creators have been sharing from their hearts in some very personal blogs. That makes my blog this week a…

Which leads me to my actual topic. No, it’s not Killer Instinct or fighting games (though I could easily rant about them). I’m talking about this new “role” I’ve taken upon myself with the CotW staff: meme generator.

It was suggested many moons ago in the early stages of this audacious project that we could use memes—you know, those random images with text that circulate the inter-webs—as part of our promotion for the ongoing saga. We just never got around to it, though I certainly wanted to make some. Given that I’ve “cast” most of our characters as if they were in a movie or TV series, it’d be easy to find images of those actors and make memes, or use some of the popular memes customized to be about CotW. What held me back was I thought I’d need to create them myself in PhotoShop, which I didn’t have on hand. Then I learned there are multiple websites that will do it for you. All I have to do is select an image or upload my own.

That, Wellsians, was like opening the floodgates on my creative and quirky mind. 😛

If you’ve been hanging out on our Facebook page (and if you haven’t, why the heck not?), you’ve seen them pop up here and there. In case you missed them, here they are:

Unlike Game of Thrones, our books actually get released...eventually...

And Morpheus would know.

As you can tell, Sean Bean is quite a fan of our series since he’s in two of our memes.

The first two are obviously promotional and meant to drum up some excitement for The Seekers and the Hidden, the next entry in the Bron & Calea subseries written by our newest writer, Gregory Meyer. Both are popular memes utilizing famous characters from popular culture. (I’m sure you know who they are). It wasn’t hard to adapt them for our purposes.

My favorite, though, is the third one. I’ve made it no secret that I love The Lord of the Rings, but the meme speaks to how I’ve felt (okay, I guess I am getting personal in this blog :P) while writing Bron & Calea #5. Calea, in true Nick Hayden fashion, is a complex, multilayered character. So much so it’d be easy to “dumb her down” to avoid the daunting task of writing her properly. I was hesitant to write a Calea-centric story because of that, but I’m also not one to back away from a challenge, so I accepted the assignment. It’s been slow going for many reasons (I’m a busy man, for one thing), but it has been a bit frustrating trying to do Calea justice. Hence the meme. After The Well’s Orphan (aka “that depressing thing”), it’s hard to top Nick’s handling of her.

It’s only appropriate, then, that I end this blog with one more meme. This one is an “original,” you could say, since I didn’t use a popular image and instead uploaded my own (or, in this case, one I found on the internet). This is Grant Gustin of the CW’s Flash series. I “cast” him as Jaysynn Kyzer from our other subseries.

It's a legitimate question.
