Meanwhile, Somewhere Else in the World

by Nick Hayden
April 7, 2017

Last month, Timothy Deal revisited The Select’s Bodyguard, the first story in the Children of the Wells saga. This month, I’d like to revisit The Fall of the House of Kyzer by Nathan Marchand.

Early on, we here at CotW decided we wanted to have two concurrent plotlines. Doing so gave us a greater window into the world we were creating. While I constructed the technocratic city of Jalseion, and its two semi-obsessive main characters, Nathan Marchand was busy unveiling a different type of story.

Thyrion is the center of the Children of the Wells’ world, Lomara. It’s where the political and religious power is concentrated. It’s where the Cataclysm started. And it’s where we begin the journey of a character very different from Bron or Calea.

Jaysynn Kyzer, black sheep of the Kyzer dynasty, has no magic. He has no real authority, although he was born into the royal family. The Fall of the House of Kyzer is the story of his search for meaning intersecting with his empire’s struggle for survival. It’s a hero’s journey.

Unlike Bron and Calea, Jaysynn is more relatable. He’s insecure but he wants to do the right thing. He’s out of his depth, but he wants to find a way to help people. His challenge is to become the man his people need.

So, unlike The Select’s Bodyguard, which is intensely focused, we get a story set against a larger political background. We get a friend who might be a villain. We get hints about the Cataclysm. We get family strife. And we get tracing.

The tracing is really cool and completely Nathan’s addition. While Bron has his brute force, Jaysynn has his speed and gravity-defying, building-leaping acrobatics.

In the end, Nathan creates a story that explores the world of Lomara in a distinct way, setting the events of the Cataclysm in a larger political realm, while maintaining the focus on character that is one of our guiding principles here at CotW. Jaysynn is not like Bron or Calea, and Thyrion is definitely not Jalseion, and those are two of the biggest reasons the concurrent storylines appealed to us as writers. Hopefully, it appeals to you as well.

If you haven’t read The Fall of the House of Kyzer, give it a try. It’s the story of the underdog thrust into power–and the forces, internal and external, working against him. It’s the start of an adventurous series of novels, with more on the horizon. And if you have read it (or even if you haven’t), stay tuned for a new short story to be published in two weeks that gives further insight into the sort of corruption that worked its way throughout the House of Kyzer, and which disgusted Jaysynn so much.

Join Us at Fantasticon Fort Wayne!

by Nathan Marchand
October 27, 2016

s4-ep10-imageI’ve written several blogs about my annual trips to Gen-Con in Indianapolis, especially when I started selling Children of the Wells books there. This weekend I’m going to a local, smaller convention in Fort Wayne, Indiana, called Fantasticon. I’ll be selling all my books, including CotW volumes, but what makes this special is I’ll be joined by my partners in crime, Nick Hayden, Eric Anderson, and Jarod Marchand. With it being Halloween weekend, I may as well wear my Captain America costume and say, “Avengers assemble!”

Yes, that’s right—my cohorts will be with me. Nick will be selling his own books, including The Unremarkable Squire and a new short story collection, as well as Children of the Wells. Eric will be promoting his ministry Nerd Chapel and selling our devotional, 42: Discovering Faith Through Fandom. My brother Jarod will be selling his artwork, which includes some illustrations he’s made for my stories. This will be Nick and Jarod’s first times as vendors. Previously, Nick and I have gone to author fairs together and Jarod has been my assistant at Gen-Con. We’re all getting tables next to each other, so you can easily get autographs from us.

Fantasticon is a traveling convention that’s gone to several locations in Michigan (where it started) and Ohio since February. Fort Wayne is its first and only stop in Indiana. It’s being held at the Grand Wayne Center in downtown this Saturday and Sunday from 10am-6pm and 10am-5pm, respectively. Guests will include film directors Scott Russo and Scott Spiegel. A replica of the 1966 Batmobile will also be there.

According to the con’s website:

Fantasticon is a mid-size show created for true comic book and pop culture collectors and fans. The fans that come to our shows are true collectors that are looking for those rare items for their personal collections. Most leave very satisfied as we pride ourselves on having great dealers and artists at our shows. If you collect it, you will find it at a Fantasticon Show.

Fantasticon is proud to have a presence in multiple cities throughout the mid-west. Currently we are in five different cities, in three different states including Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana.

We also, are very proud of the fact that our admission price is the lowest of any other comparable shows. And the cost for being an exhibitor or artist at the Fantasticon is far less than any comparable comic cons out there.

Be there or be square!

Meme Machine

By Nathan Marchand
May 20, 2016

For the last few weeks, my fellow Children of the Wells creators have been sharing from their hearts in some very personal blogs. That makes my blog this week a…

Which leads me to my actual topic. No, it’s not Killer Instinct or fighting games (though I could easily rant about them). I’m talking about this new “role” I’ve taken upon myself with the CotW staff: meme generator. (more…)

Our Series Trailer is Here!

By Timothy Deal
September 25, 2015

So you’ve been looking for a way to introduce people to your favorite post-apocalyptic modern-fantasy multi-author webfiction series, but just describing its genre leaves you short of breath. How are you going to get your friends excited for Children of the Wells without talking their ears off and making their eyes glaze over, thus turning them into creepy Van Gogh zombies?

The answer is: show them our book series trailer! That’s right, we’ve created a special trailer that highlights important characters and ideas from Children of the Wells that newbies will want to know. Check it out now:

Did you enjoy? I certainly hope so. Making a book series trailer was something we had talked about doing for quite awhile, but as the main video producer on the team, I knew what I wanted to do for the trailer would take some time to pull together.

The biggest challenge was getting enough people to voice all the characters I wanted to include. For expediency’s sake, I wound up recording Jaysynn’s lines myself and recruited ladies from my family to record all of the female characters except for Calea, who was voiced by CotW editor Natasha Hayden. Bron was voiced by my senior pastor, Stuart Kruse, and the rest of the voice actors were recruited via freelance website fiverr.com. (Apologies to a few others who were either recast or whose recordings didn’t mix well with the others. You know who you are. Sorry!)

Thanks to these folks’ help, I like to think we put together a truly cinematic trailer to promote our little corner of the webfiction world. If you know anyone who enjoys post-apocalyptic stories, modern-fantasy, multi-author works, webfiction, or any combination thereof, show them our trailer and get them hooked!

Children of the Wells Video Game Kickstarter–Coming Soon!

April 1, 2015

Friends,

I have the distinct pleasure and honor to announce the pre-announcement of the Children of the Wells first ever Kickstarter campaign for not one, but TWO indie video game projects! I, along with the other members of ChildrenoftheWells.com, have been hard at work brainstorming and planning out this huge and exciting endeavor which can be funded for the paltry sum of $10,000.

These will be all-new, canon stories featuring additional adventures of Bron & Calea, and of Jaysynn.

“One of my favorite aspects of reading comic books are when storylines span multiple books,” explains project writer Greg Meyer. “I love buying issues of series I have no interest in or face the risk of being completely lost in the story I’m currently reading. I want to bring that same kind of thrill by mixing books with video games. If you want to know what’s going on in the books, you have to play the games.”

When the project was first tossed around, we jumped at the chance. I mean, how hard can it be to make a video game? I made one on my calculator in High School, and technology has only grown since then.

We’re not only making two video games, but their styles will be completely different. That’s right, two different experiences for the CotW fan!

Jaysynn Quest Go! is an RPG that harkens back to those magical days of our youth, spending hours in front of the television on Saturdays clicking buttons to attack with a sword instead of straining our arm! We’ve studied the classics of the genre, from SaGa Frontier to Quest 64, even going all the way back to that NES gem Hydlide. Spend endless hours getting lost in first-person dungeons, getting into random battles every two steps, and trying to wrap your head around our incomprehensible battle system! Best of all, we’ve removed save points and instead allow you to input passwords. Now you never have to worry about the game battery dying ever again! As for the plot, follow Jaysynn as he traverses the trap-filled labyrinths of Lord Dracon’s tower to rescue Kyrie from the power-mad villain and finally marry her. Can Jaysynn survive the monsters below and defeat Mecha Lord Dracon X to save her? You’ll have to play it and find out! And remember, it’s canon.

Bron & Calea and the Gooey Select is based on the wacky and fondly remembered adventure games of the 80’s. Follow our heroes as they attempt to solve who’s been turning former Select into pink goo. Solve complex and intricate stage puzzles that will require hours upon hours of endless pixel clicking and item combinations. Did you collect the ketchup packet, ball of lint, and dodecahedron from the room you visited twenty hours ago but can’t revisit? No? Better restart your game and start all over again!

Stunning old-school graphics!

Stunning old-school graphics!

Our Story Designer Greg Meyer is hard at work writing out the game scenarios. Based on what we have, it should take 400 hours for you to complete just one of the two games. Now that’s a ton of content! Think of the value you’re going to get if you choose to support our Kickstarter program!

Of course, no Kickstarter project is complete without rewards! Here’s what we’ve planned so far for our wonderful and amazing donors:

  • $1) A dollar? Really? And you’re expecting a reward? How dare you, you cheapskate.
  • $10) Autographed CotW ebook of our choosing.
  • $30) All of the CotW ebooks, signed by just one of our authors.
  • $50) An ebook and one of our old T-shirts with that pizza stain that won’t come out.
  • $500) An eBook and a vial of our tears.
  • $10,000) All expense paid trip to exotic Indiana.*

Note: Contributor is responsible for airfare, lodgings, and food during duration of trip.

We sincerely hope you consider pledging something to our Kickstarter. With your help, we can create a truly revolutionary experience.

Thank you,

The Children of the Wells Staff

Top Ten Reasons to Buy Bron & Calea Volume 1

By Nick Hayden
September 11, 2014

As you may know, Bron & Calea Volume 1, our print collection of the first three stories in the Bron & Calea saga, is now available on Amazon. If you’re uncertain about the necessity of purchasing the volume for your private collection, let me convince you. Here are TEN REASONS you need to buy Bron & Calea Volume 1 immediately.

10. Because when you support a starving artist, an angel gets its wings.

Seriously, read the reviews of these bears if you haven’t.

9. Because you need to add one more item to your cart to qualify for free shipping, and it’s either Bron & Calea or a five-pound bag of Haribo Sugar Free Gummy Bears.

8. Because Nyasha’s by far your favorite companion, even better than Rose, and certainly better than that loud…wait, what? You mean she’s not that Doctor’s assistant?

7. Because there’s nothing like reading The Well’s Orphan to make your bad day seem not quite so bad.

6. Because you’ve been meaning to read Children of the Wells for the last year, but things just keep getting in the way. Like doing your taxes. And having your second child. And spending those four months in the nunnery. But now–now–you have time to finally….just a second, the phone’s ringing…and the drying just beeped…and there’s some unwatched shows on the DVR….

5. Because you want to be a fan in reality, and not just in Thyrion. (Groan.) (more…)

Better Late Than Never

By Nathan Marchand
September 4, 2014

I hate logistics. They annoy me.

Especially when I’m scrambling to make sure I have everything ready for this year’s Gen-Con. It was my third year selling books at the convention, and while I had loads of promotional materials for Children of the Wells last year, I had actual books to take with me this year! But we all know that old saying about the best laid plans. It goes hand-in-hand with Murphy’s Law.

Nick and Natasha, as usual, have insanely busy summers, so Nick didn’t place an order for Bron and Calea, Vol. 1 until the last possible minute. I figured he entered my address as the mailing destination, so I checked my mailbox every day in eager expectation. Nothing. Empty as the wells after the Cataclysm. Finally, the day before the convention arrived. My brother Jarod and I needed to leave for Indianapolis to set up our table at the Indiana Convention Center. I wasn’t sure how long we had for that. Nick told me the package was coming via UPS, not the mail—and he used his address, not mine!

‘Children of the Wells’ Returns to Gen-Con!

By Nathan Marchand
August 7, 2014

Have I ever mentioned I love conventions? Particularly the nerdy variety? They’re what I imagine Heaven will be like. Well, at least my little corner of Heaven will be like that.

Anyway, I’ll be returning to Gen-Con this month. I went there last year with some promotional materials for Children of the Wells—which were all gone by day three of the four-day con! That was back when we were only posting stories online. Now with print books available, I’ll have something tangible to share with would-be fans of our audacious saga. (more…)

Webfiction, Marketing, and You

By Timothy Deal
September 13, 2013

In previous blog posts, I’ve talked about our vision for Children of the Wells as well as some of the brain work we’ve put into the creation of its world. But all our vision, world-building, and writing will have limited impact if people aren’t reading our stories. As much as we enjoy collaborating and telling these stories for their own sake, we are hopeful they can be found enjoyable and even meaningful beyond our immediate circle of friends.

Unfortunately, marketing is not exactly our group’s first passion, nor is it likely to be in our top ten. Our goal is not to make ourselves famous (believe me, some of us would certainly prefer to remain as anonymous as possible), but to share our stories with as many people as we can. While we are making progress — new installments are regularly announced via social media, and Nathan has been enthusiastically talking up the site on his vlog and at conventions — we also know we have plenty of room to improve. ‘Children of the Wells’ Enjoys the Best Four Days of Gaming

By Nathan Marchand
September 6, 2013

I’m a shameless self-promoter, as I’m sure you’ve noticed. However, I’m also a shameless promoter for fellow writers and their works (which Nick appreciates since he’s a better writer than promoter). Sometimes I wonder if I missed my calling as a salesman or a literary agent…maybe.

That’s one of many reasons why I love going to Gen-Con, a huge convention held in Indianapolis every August. The event has been around for over 45 years. It’s held in the Indiana Convention Center. It started as a gaming convention (board games, RPGs, etc.) but has expanded to include a little bit of everything that appeals to the nerd/geek community. It’s possible to see the Joker meditate while Link from The Legend of Zelda plays his ocarina (seriously, I saw that happen!). No wonder its tagline is “the best four days of gaming.” (more…)
